Beryllium Copper SAFETY DATA SHEET 4 FIRST AID MEASURES General Measures: Under normal handling and use, exposure to solid forms of this material present few health hazards. Subsequent operations such as grinding, melting or welding may produce potentially hazardous dust or fumes which can be inhaled or come in contact with the skin or eyes.
Beryllium: The beryllium in this product is not known to cause acute health effects. Inhaling particulate containing beryllium may cause a serious, chronic lung disease called Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) in some individuals. See section 3.2.5 Chronic (long-term health effects).
Treatment of Chronic Beryllium Disease: There is no known treatment which will cure chronic beryllium disease. Prednisone or other corticosteroids are the most specific treatment currently available. They are directed at suppressing the immunological reaction and can be effective in diminishing signs and symptoms of chronic beryllium disease.
Signal Word: DANGER. Hazard Statements: Reference OSHA 29 CFR 1910-1024 Beryllium Standard. May effect lungs, causes damage to lungs through prolonged or repeated inhalation exposure; such as acute/chronic beryllium disease (CBD). May cause cancer.

Relevant identified uses of the substance: Scientific research and development.
Airborne particles of beryllium alloys can, if inhaled to excess, cause irreversible lung damage in people who are sensitive to beryllium. Prevention of this adverse health effect (called berylliosis or, more precisely, chronic beryllium disease) lies in maintaining good air quality.
The effects of continued low exposure to beryllium are unknown for individuals who are sensitized to beryllium or who have a diagnosis of chronic beryllium disease. This uncertainty leads some physicians to advise a reduction or elimination of further exposure to beryllium.
