10 Ιουν 2019 · In 1972, West Virginia DNR officials decided to close McDowell County to firearm hunting for deer. Logan, Mingo and Wyoming counties followed in 1979. The area’s whitetail population began to rebound. By the mid-1980s, the four counties were starting to earn a reputation among archers as a trophy-buck hotspot.
Since 1979, four of the state's most southerly counties — Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming — have had no legal firearms hunting for deer. While deer densities are lower than in many other parts of the nation, the lack of legal gun hunting means a fair percentage of bucks reach maturity.
The “LARGEST TYPICAL WHITETAIL BY COUNTY” section lists the largest typical whitetail deer taken from each county that the hunter has decided to enter into the WV Bowhunters Association Records. This list does not include every deer that is in the WV DNR’s records.
A trophy-class animal could obviously turn up almost anywhere occasionally, but the southwestern section of the state is best. Counties to consider include Boone, Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Wayne, and Wyoming (some of which have been archery-only for many years).
