Deagon’s Dogma Dark Arisen is the best action RPG on the PS4, hands down. It has combat the Witcher can only dream of, and a dungeon full of towering monsters with wild battle mechanics that makes the Monster Hunter grind look tedious.
Someone already said Divinity, these are some of the best in the genre. 1 isn't as polished as 2 but i think it's worth trying, if only to see the improvements they make with 2. Wasteland 3 is another excellent party based rpg, 1 and 2 are good as well but a bit dated.
Two is simply better in every way. Tales of Arise, Dragon Quest XI, if you have a switch, Xenoblade Chronicles. Star Ocean. The newest is The Divine Force, and it’s a solid entry and doesn’t require previous knowledge.
I've heard Disco Elysium (detective game) and the Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous (fantasy rpg) work well on ps4, but I'm not 100% sure. Check the subreddits for these games on how they work on ps4.
If you're going to include tactical stuff, my opinion is that Vandal Hearts and Front Mission 3 are the next best games to FFT. Kartia gets runner-up. Reply reply
The thing is, there is no magical, singular best rpg anywhere. It's all preference and by now theres tons of great RPGs so your best bet is to just try as any of them as you can and find your fave(s) man.
So I wondered, which of the PS1 RPGs you'd recommend nowadays, ones with a good story in particular? Or maybe even ones more unknown that went under the radar while Final Fantasy and such were dominating?
