The first one on our 10 best ROM hacks for Nuzlocke challenges is Pokemon Polished Crystal. This game is a GBC ROM hack but is just as good. The interesting part is that the game has a built-in Nuzlocke mode.
This enhanced ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal lets you catch all Gen 1 & 2 Pokémon in a single playthrough. It also adds modern must-haves such as the new Eeveelutions, Togekiss, Magnezone, and Magmortar – and every Pokémon’s typing and movesets have been updated to match Gen 6.
I've finished adding all the data for all the main series games to my Nuzlocke tracker! This includes all boss battles, from gym leaders, rivals, evil team and elite four. I've also added encounter suggestions to each of the locations, showing you what encounters are available in each location and highlighting dupes!
Sacred Gold/Storm Silver are also fun to nuzlocke. I know a version 2 of these is in the works as well from Drayano, but the originals are also probably the least difficult of the Drayano hacks and are fun to play through.
If you're looking for a vanilla ROM to nuzlocke, I'd recommend either Fire Red or Emerald. Both are fairly forgiving. I also found Black 2 to be easy, but I think I just got lucky. If you're looking for a Romhack, Pokemon Unbound and Pokemon Gaia are both great.
Here is a list of some of the best Pokemon games for a Nuzlocke challenge. We've also included a couple of ROM hacks that you can use.
We ranked a straightforward Gen 1 cheat as #2 in our Nuzlocke competition. For those unfamiliar, Pokémon Red: Blood & Tears is a Nuzlocke hack that only modifies the game to make it more difficult to beat the game under the Nuzlocke regulations.
