In this review we will present the results of recent $$\beta $$ -decay studies using the total absorption technique that cover topics of interest for applications, nuclear structure and astrophysics.
Beta decay or β decay represents the disintegration of a parent nucleus to a daughter through the emission of the beta particle. Beta-decay is governed by weak interaction. During beta decay, one of two down quarks changes into an up quark by emitting a W – boson (carries away a negative charge).
The beta decay is a radioactive decay in which a proton in a nucleus is converted into a neutron (or vice-versa). In the process the nucleus emits a beta particle (either an electron or a positron) and quasi-massless particle, the neutrino. Recall the mass chain and Beta decay plots of Fig. 7.
The present investigation proves that during the decay of radioactive substances, not only alpha rays, but also beta rays, leave the radioactive atom with a velocity that is characteristic of the substance in question.
Consider energy release. α decay is due to the emission of a 4 2He nucleus. 2He is doubly magic and very tightly bound. α decay is energetically favourable for almost all with A≥190 and for many A≥150.
Precision measurements in allowed nuclear beta decays and neutron decay are reviewed and analyzed both within the Standard Model and looking for new physics. The analysis incorporates the most recent experimental and theoretical developments.
