5 Μαρ 2017 · Binghamton represents the area as the “Carousel Capital of the World,” courtesy of Johnson’s endowments of half a dozen of the festive mainstays dotted across the metropolitan area. He donated the carousels between 1919 and 1934.
What is even more remarkable is that of 150 wood-carved carousels remaining in the United States and Canada, six are right here in Greater Binghamton, New York. All six are now on the New York State Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
Binghamton is the Carousel Capital of the World. But, that’s not even the story. The story isn’t that all six of the area’s treasured antiques are on the state Registry of Historic Places as well as the national Historic Places Registry, although that’s pretty cool. The story is how they got here.
Broome County is known as the "Carousel Capital of the World". These beautiful carousels are extremely rare and are considered true works of art. 1992 - The carousel at George W. Johnson Park was placed on the National Register of Historic places.
