Books were important to Galen. He wrote a lot—or rather, dictated a lot to his slave secretaries. His surviving writings run to more than 20,000 pages in the most nearly complete modern edition and amount to about ten per cent of all ancient Greek literature before a.d. 350.
16 Απρ 2020 · In my previous blog on ‘A Translation of Galen, Simple Medicines, Books I-V, Part One’, I explained that I am nearing completion of the first translation of the theoretical books of Galen’s main work of pharmacology into English. The first five books show how drugs and foods work.
Abstract. After his early studies in Pergamum, where he was born in 129, Galen trained with the best physicians and philosophers in Smyrna, Corinth, and Alexandria before returning to his hometown, where he served as physician to the gladiators.
Galen is the most important medical writer in Graeco-Roman an-tiquity, and also extremely valuable for understanding Graeco-Roman thought and society in the second century AD.
The biography of Galen by G. Sarton, Galen of Pergamům (Lawrence, Kansas, 1954) and the preliminary notice by R. E. Siegel, Galens system of physiology and medicine (Basle, New York, 1968), pp. 4-18, are extremely unreliable guides.
