Oiseau dans l’espace belongs in a group of works exploring the theme of birds and flight, which had its beginnings around 1911 with Maiastra. The Bird in Space series spanned between 1924 and 1941.
Inspired by a true story, Invincible recounts the last 48 hours in the life of Marc-Antoine Bernier, a 14-year-old boy on a desperate quest for freedom. ‘Bird in Space (L'Oiseau dans l'espace)’ was created in 1940 by Constantin Brâncuși. Refining and concentrating the bird form, Brâncuși made his first Bird in Space in 1923, in marble. Later versions were made in bronze and plaster. Brâncuși began each work by making a plaster cast from a marble version of the sculpture.
The development of the bird theme in Constantin Brancusi's oeuvre can be traced from its appearance in the Maiastra sculptures (1910–18) through the Golden Bird (L'Oiseau d'or, 1919) group and, finally, to the Bird in Space series.
