1 Δεκ 2023 · It takes more than three weeks for killdeer eggs to hatch. When something approaches its nest, the killdeer spreads its wings and tail, scolds and may even fly at it. If a potential predator comes very near, the bird tries to lure it away from the nest by playing wounded.
Killdeers are unlikely to use nest boxes. They prefer scraping out a depression in the ground to lay their eggs. However, if you have a low, flat gravel roof or pebbled landscaping, you may attract killdeer to your yard.
Feeds on a wide variety of insects, including beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, fly larvae, many others; also eats spiders, earthworms, centipedes, crayfish, snails. Eats small amounts of seeds as well.
These birds lay their eggs in a simple depression on open ground and areas with sparse vegetation, and because their eggs are spotted and speckled, they remain easily camouflaged and blend into the surroundings.

Killdeer and Human Interaction. Humans and Killdeer usually get along swimmingly. Because these birds are none too picky about their habitats, and they have a vast range, habitat destruction causes minimal damage for them. In fact, these birds usually thrive in agricultural areas and parks.
These tawny birds run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they’ve startled up any insect prey. Their voice, a far-carrying, excited kill-deer, is a common sound even after dark, often given in flight as the bird circles overhead on slender wings.
