The three introduced species of “cardinals” found in Hawaii are the Northern Cardinal, Red-crested Cardinal, and Yellow-billed Cardinal. While not native to the islands, these birds have established populations in Hawaii and are now a common sight in many parts of the state.
If you see birds that look like this but their head is brown instead of red, those are the juveniles. Yellow-billed cardinals like waterside habitat, so they are perfectly at home in Hawaii. They often forage on the ground in small groups for seeds and insects.
As you can gather from their name, these birds have been attributed with stunning vermilion plumage. Due to sexual dimorphism, only the males are of that color, while the females are mostly dull brown. But both sexes share dark eyes and legs, heavy, grey bills, and red, erect crests.
Despite its name and similar body shape, these birds are actually members of the tanager family and aren’t true cardinals. Red-crested Cardinals are primarily seed-eating birds, but they also consume insects and small invertebrates.
