You’ll find the most common, most dangerous, and most iconic species in this identification guide. I’ve created detailed profiles, including pictures, of snakes in Wisconsin.
Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) are the most common venomous species in Wisconsin. These snakes are abundant in the Northeastern regions of the United States and the Southwestern regions of Wisconsin. Timber Rattlesnakes have a gray or yellow-brown base color with black crossbands.
Look for a distinctive yellow or red neckband. The snake’s head color is usually slightly darker than the rest of the body, tending towards black rather than gray or olive. Adults are usually between 25-38 cm (10-15 in) long. It can be hard to find these snakes in Wisconsin!

eastern Wisconsin. The Prairie has a yellow belly speckled with black and is found only in extreme southwestern Wisconsin. Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus). Watersnakes. Fortunately for Wisconsin hikers, the Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon) is the state’s only Nerodia species. The body color changes from region to region. However, when spotting a long, bulky looking snake in or basking near the water, guessing it’s a watersnake will be a good first guess. Rat Snakes.
The foxsnake has many large reddish-brown, chocolate brown or black mid-dorsal blotches along its back and other smaller blotches on its sides on a background color of yellow, tan or olive-gray. The head of adults is usually a dark copper, rust or orange color.
