It is our tallest native broad-leaved tree, and has dark grey bark. In the spring and early summer the sticky resin on leaf buds releases a strong, balsamic fragrance. It is hardy, fast-growing, and relatively short-lived, though some trees have been known to live for 200 years.
Native in the Pacific Northwest, from Alaska to California, east to Alberta and Wyoming. Found near stream beds or other wet areas, sea level to mid elevation. Very tall tree, eagles often use them as nest sites. The cotton can be a real nuisance if the wind is blowing it into your yard.

Old bark is dark gray and deeply furrowed. In the Landscape: Black Cottonwood is not a good choice for most gardens. It becomes very large very fast and is also very messy. It, however, is very good wildlife habitat and is very valuable for quick restoration along floodplains and other moist areas.
Black cottonwood grows on a variety of soils and sites, from moist silts, sands, and gravels of aquatic islands and river bars to rich humus upland sites. While it prefers the wetter sites it is considered drought tolerant.
