Black-haw viburnum is a large, native shrub or a small tree. In spring, new leaves emerge copper-colored followed by white, flat-topped flowers. In fall, black fruits contrast with the pinkish-red foliage. A great plant for naturalized areas.
4-5 inch clusters of small white fragrant flowers appear in the spring. Individual flowers at 5 petaled and 1/4 inch across with long yellowish stamens. Blooms from March to April. The ovate glossy leaves are 3-4 inches long and 1 inch across with fine serrations and a pointed tip. They turn red to purple in the fall.
Resembling plum leaves, the handsome foliage of ovate, glossy dark green leaves turns rich bronze to vibrant red in fall. A very rewarding shrub that is not only good-looking but also durable and pest free.
Blackhaw Viburnum is fairly easy to identify. The most similar species is Viburnum lentago (Nannyberry), which has similar white flowers and blue-black drupes. However, the leaves of Nannyberry have longer tips than those of Blackhaw Viburnum.
Viburnum prunifolium (known as blackhaw or black haw, blackhaw viburnum, sweet haw, and stag bush) is a species of Viburnum native to eastern North America, from Connecticut west to eastern Kansas, and south to Alabama and Texas.
6 Σεπ 2023 · Blackhaw viburnum trees grow around 15 ft. (4.5 m) tall with a spread of 12 ft. (3.6 m). With proper pruning, you can also grow this multi-stemmed plant as a large shrub, privacy screen, or hedge plant.
22 Ιαν 2024 · The leaves of Blackhaw Viburnum resemble a plum tree leaf, hence its Latin species name of ‘prunifolium.’ The common name ‘Blackhaw’ is a reference to its dark bark, as well as to its resemblance to hawthorns (although they are not closely related).
