The test was designed to overcome some drawbacks of the Westergren method; it allows for calculation of ESR in low blood volumes (150 μL) and detects the formation of rouleaux in 20 seconds. Determination of ESR by this method appears to be less affected by hemoglobin and corpuscular volume.
