Excellent in a shady border with Ferns and Astilbes. 'Blue Billow' is a reliable bloomer through Zone 6, and adventurous gardeners in Zone 5, where flowering occurs 3 or 4 years out of 5 may also wish to give it a try. It performed well at our nursery in full sun. Blooms on old wood.
Delicate clusters of light blue flowers create a splash against the dense green foliage. The glossy leaves have a red-purple hue in late summer and fall. Compact lacecap works well in the garden and containers.
Blue lacecap flowers abound in early to mid-summer and age to deep crimson. Do not cut back in the fall as you risk losing your next year's blooms. Will do best in a slightly sheltered location with ample moisture.

'Blue Billow' is a lovely, Lacecap Hydrangea whose clusters of light blue flowers last for several weeks in early to midsummer. They turn a stunning deep crimson as they age, a fine color echo to the leaves, which become an attractive shade of burgundy in fall.
Bloom: Start out pink and fade to an iridescent blue. Sepals fade to white. The leaves are very rough and are deep green. Around 4 feet tall. Will need winter protection in zone 5 the first year or two, but after that can be quite cold hardy. A tough lacecap that can handle storms and pollution well. An early bloomer.
