Unlike Oregon or Montana, known for having many agate deposits, Iowas agate resources are limited and spread out.

  6. The best places to rockhound in Iowa are the Keokuk geode beds and the streams and tributaries to the northwest of Keokuk which contain geodes and other interesting rocks and minerals. Almost any stream bed or rocky outcrop in Iowa is a great place to search for quartz-family minerals like agates.
