Medically reviewed by Danielle McNeil, D.P.M. Calcaneal spur reduction is a type of heel spur surgery. Heel spurs are painful outgrowths on the heel bone (calcaneus) that cause discomfort, inflammation, and swelling. Heel spur surgery is done when conservative therapies fail to provide relief.
Treating foot pain with heel spur surgery can be done in a couple of different ways. Endoscopic plantar fasciotomy is the first way to eliminate pain. In this procedure, two slits are made around the heel.
The surgeon identifies the plantar fascia insertion at the heel (the spot where the ligament attaches to the bone) and makes a partial cut to relieve tension in the tissue. If there is a large bone spur, it can also be removed.
