Bourbon Red Turkeys are a heritage breed. The earliest record of this breed is from Kentucky in the 1800s. They were named after Bourbon County in Kentucky. They were called Bourbon Butternuts at first. They are a result of cross breeding Buff, Bronze and White Holland turkeys.

Bourbon Reds have brownish to dark red plumage with white in the flight of their tail feathers. The neck and chest feathers are a deep chestnut mahogany and the under color feathers light buff to almost white.
