This footage will help researchers fill in knowledge gaps about the biology and feeding strategies of bowhead whales.
18 Νοε 2022 · In this first watch, we will explore what some bowhead whales in Arctic Canada have been doing from July until mid-October 2022. After their spring migrations, bowhead whales take a break for a few months and spend the short Arctic summer feeding, socialising and nursing their calves.
The bowhead whale is the second heaviest animal on the Earth, next to the blue whale. Inuit hunters have reported Bowhead whales surfacing through 60 cm (24 in) of ice. The Bowhead whale has a thick layer of blubber that protects it from the freezing cold Arctic waters.
The Bowhead Whale is the only baleen whale that spends its whole life in the Arctic Circle in and near sea ice. Bowhead Whales are nomads of the sea and migrate seasonally to avoid getting trapped by ice and to reach areas rich in food.
