The 1860 U.S. Census Slave Schedules for Mecklenburg County, Virginia (NARA microfilm series M653, Roll 1394) reportedly includes a total of 12,420 slaves. This transcription includes 184 slaveholders who held 20 or more slaves in Mecklenburg County, accounting for 7,853 slaves, or about 63% of the County total.

In the difficult post-war Reconstruction years the trustees relocated the remote and struggling school to its present location in Ashland, Virginia, closer to railroad service. Boydton/Clarksville was the terminus of the 19th-century "Boydton and Petersburg Plank Road" leading to Petersburg.
Boydton was founded in 1812 by Alexander Boyd who owned the property and designed the town. Many of the town’s streets are named for the patriotic heroes of the War of 1812. The town was incorporated in 1834, and it became the center of Mecklenburg County government.
