9 Φεβ 2022 · According to a 2019 United Nations report, about 1% of the wealthiest Brazilians possess 28.3%, or nearly a third, of the country’s income, resulting in the second-highest income concentration in the world.
In these studies, we offer a description and an interpretation of the main causes of income distribution changes in Brazil in the past twenty-five years. Section 2 presents an overview of the main socioeconomic developments and the main economic challenges ahead.
1 Οκτ 2018 · This paper has drawn on income tax tabulations and national accounts data to estimate the concentration of income at the top in Brazil from 1926 to 2015. The new, homogeneous top incomes series approximates a sine wave pattern in the long-run for the top 0.1% and the top 1%.

Besides growth, public services and cash transfers have played the biggest role, the latter notably through the successful “Bolsa Familia” programme.
8 Αυγ 2018 · Income inequality in Brazil, already high, increased after the military coup of 1964 and remained very high even after democratization in the 1980s. It decreased substantially in the period 2001–2014, after inflation was controlled.

While recent data reveal reduced income inequality since the Real Plan of July 1994, the distribution of income is still among the most unequal in the world.
