Genetic test results for a mutation linked to breast cancer mean a higher risk of the disease. Learn what positive, negative, and uncertain results mean.
BRCA test results must be reported in a brief and unambiguous way to ensure ease of interpretation. The terms “positive” and “negative” can be ambiguous and should not be used. The report should include details of the laboratory that performed the test along with accreditation numbers (for example, International Organization for ...
21 Οκτ 2023 · Negative or uncertain test result. A negative test result means that no gene changes were found. However, you could still have a higher risk of cancer. A negative result is considered a "true negative" only if it finds that you don't carry the specific gene change that runs in your family.
For people with breast cancer, a negative test result helps guide treatment to treatment options for people who don’t have a BRCA1/2 inherited gene mutation. Pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant (the test is positive).
Testing for inherited changes in BRCA1 and BRCA2 can give several possible results: a positive result (a harmful change in the gene is present), a negative result (no harmful gene change is present), or a gene change (variant) of uncertain significance (VUS) result.
13 Απρ 2022 · BRCA testing looks for abnormal changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. A positive test result means you have a higher-than-average risk of developing breast, ovarian and other cancers. Knowing you have a BRCA gene mutation also means you can take steps to lower your risk and help prevent cancer.
A negative result means no BRCA gene mutation was found, but it doesn't mean you won't ever get cancer. An uncertain result means some kind of BRCA gene mutation was found, but it may or may not be linked with an increased cancer risk.
