The breadth-and-depth approach allows researchers to manage and analyse a large vol-ume of qualitative secondary data, yet retain the distinctive order of knowledge about social processes, context and detail that is the hallmark of rigorous qualitative research.

Depth refers to how personal or sensitive the information is, and breadth refers to the range of topics discussed (Greene, Derlega, & Mathews, 2006). You may recall Shrek’s declaration that ogres are like onions in the movie Shrek.
5 Δεκ 2023 · This chapter provides an overview of the breadth-and-depth method. In so doing, it builds on the rationale for and value of large-scale qualitative data analysis that we outlined in Chap. 1, where we situated big qual analysis within wider debates about the breadth and availability of big data.
Example: Jenny and Justin met for the first time at a wedding. Within minutes Jenny starts to tell Justin about her terrible ex-boyfriend and the misery he put her through. This is information that is typically shared at stage three or four, not stage one.
“Breadth” refers to the various facets of a person’s life, such as work, family, community and hobbies. “Depth” pertains to the details concerning each of these areas. The outer layers of the onion represent superficial information about a person, such as physical appearance and speech.
