2/1 game forcing is the culmination, at least so far, of seventy years of bidding theory, and has been the most popularly used system amongst the rank and file of duplicate bridge players for about 15 to 20 years.
The basic idea is that opposite to a any 1 level opening a 2 level response (a 2/1) is game forcing. Professional bridge teachers say it is much easier to teach and learn than standard 5 card majors. Primarily this is because it removes the judgement element involved in making a traditional 2/1.
The Two Over One suit response is either: forcing to game (Hardy-style) or forcing to game unless responder rebids his/her suit (Lawrence-style). No more and no less.
This is the first of two articles introducing the basic principles of the 2 Over 1 Game Force bidding system. In this article, I will discuss auctions when responder wishes to force to game. In the second article, I will discuss auctions when responder has less than game forcing values.
