The RAF’s primary task during the 1920s and early 1930s was to support low intensity operations in the British Empire and Mandated Territories, notably Iraq and Afghanistan.
However, the first cantilever monoplane heavy bomber to be built in Britain only entered RAF service in November 1936 and then to equip only 38 Squadron with just 14 aircraft. These were replaced by Vickers Wellingtons from November 1938.
