Listed in the table below are the insignia—emblems of authority—of the British Army. Badges for field officers were introduced in 1810 and the insignia was moved to the epaulettes in 1880.

By the start of the Second World War, the British Army prohibited all identifying marks on its Battle Dress uniforms save for drab (black or white on khaki) regimental or corps (branch) slip-on titles, and even these were not to be worn in the field.
In the British Army, all battallions of the Guards and of Line Regiments carry two colours. With the former the King's Colour is crimson, the Regimental Colour being the Union Jack, and all the Battle honours are placed on each colour.
