Brockport’s history began when European settlers arrived in western New York in the late 18th century to land that was occupied by the Seneca Indians. In 1788, the Phelps and Gorham land syndicate bought from the Senecas 2.6 million acres from Seneca Lake to the Genesee River, plus a 12-mile-wide strip on the west bank of the Genesee.
The Brockport Museum of Local History, formerly the Emily Knapp Museum, is located in the Village of Brockport, situated on the Erie Canal in the state of New York. The mission of the museum — an educational institution — is to collect, preserve, and provide access to the heritage and history of the greater Brockport community.
