Bulk density of soil –Definition •Bulk density of soil is the ratio between a mass of soil and its volume: 𝜌 = 𝑀 where 𝜌 is bulk density (g cm-3), 𝑀is mass of oven-dry soil (g) and is volume of soil (cm3) Several methods (direct, indirect) can be used to estimate bulk density. We will use direct methods: 1. Coated clod method 2.
Soil bulk density is dependent on soil texture, and is used as an indicator of compaction and relative restrictions to root growth (Table 1). Typical values for soil bulk density range from 1.0 to 1.7 g/cm3 (Arshad, Lowery and Grossman, 2015).
A well-structured mineral soil generally has a bulk density around 1.3 g/cm3. Bulk density is determined by sampling a known volume of undisturbed soil and weighing it after drying. For organic soils, sampling inside a frame is recommended. For mineral soils, the most common technique involves inserting a sampling cylinder into the soil. The ...

15 Απρ 2024 · Accurate bulk density data is important for the determination of soil porosity and soil moisture (Robinson et al., 2022, Vereecken et al., 1989). Bulk density is inversely related to soil porosity which shows the space left in the soil for air and water movement (McNabb et al., 2001).
The bulk density measurement is a valuable tool for understanding soil processes such as heat, water and nutrient exchange, but only if measured for soil material less than 2 mm in size. The following equation helps to correct the bulk density for rocks in soil sample: Mass of dry soil (g) – Mass of Rocks (g)
