Before withdrawing from the Border Conference in 1956, the Red Raiders won nine conference championships, the most held by a Border Conference member. Weaver and his predecessor Dell Morgan each won four conference championships, a record for a Texas Tech head coach.

Texas Tech's bid for its first Cotton Bowl victory on Jan. 2 will be led by none other than The Associated Press Southwest Conference Coach of the Year. Spike Dykes, 56, received the award for the second consecutive year.
Texas Tech has had 17 head coaches, and three-interim head coaches. Five coaches have won conference championships with the Red Raiders: Pete Cawthon , Dell Morgan , DeWitt Weaver , Steve Sloan , and Spike Dykes .

When Dykes departed in 2000, Texas Tech hired Mike Leach, who eventually became the winningest coach in school history. He is also the school's all-time winningest coach in postseason play, competing in a bowl game each year during his stay and garnering a 5–3 record.
