Cædmon's Hymn: a Modern English Translation of the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) Poem. "Cædmon's Hymn" was composed sometime between 658 and 680 AD and a ppears to be the oldest extant poem in the English language. According to the Venerable Bede (673-735), Cædmon was an illiterate herdsman who was given the gift of poetic composition by an angel.

Cædmon's Hymn is a short Old English poem attributed to Cædmon, a supposedly illiterate and unmusical cow-herder who was, according to the Northumbrian monk Bede (d. 735), miraculously empowered to sing in honour of God the Creator. The poem is Cædmon's only known composition.
