Calchas (/ ˈ k æ l k ə s /; Ancient Greek: Κάλχας, Kalkhas) is an Argive mantis, or "seer," dated to the Age of Legend, which is an aspect of Greek mythology. Calchas appears in the opening scenes of the Iliad, which is believed to have been based on a war conducted by the Achaeans against the powerful city of Troy in the Late Bronze Age.
Calchas was one of the most famous and important seers from Greek mythology. Calchas was the primary seer of the Achaean forces during the Trojan War, providing guidance and counselling to Agamemnon.
Calchas was a seer in Greek mythology, son of Thestor, able to see future events based on how the birds flew. His ability was a gift by the oracular god Apollo. On the brink of the Trojan War, Agamemnon, one of the leaders of the Achaeans, angered the goddess Artemis after killing a sacred deer.
After the end of the Trojan War, the Achaean army was dispersed and many of their leaders took different ways to return home (see Map: The Returns). Calchas journeyed southwards through Asia Minor in company of Amphilochus 2, Polypoetes 1, and Leonteus 1.
Calchas has in fact revealed that the cause of Apollo’s anger lay not in the sphere of ritual, but rather in Agamemnon’s breach of a social norm, in that he had insulted a priest, who is under the protection of a powerful god. Any other noble could have given the same diagnosis.
