15 Οκτ 2012 · Here’s where Ratón was born, around the new depot built where railroad tracks were laid atop the old Santa Fe Trail. Earlier nearby settlements, Willow Springs and Otero, were abandoned because Ratón had the new railroad and good water.

In 1882, the railroad built a roundhouse and a boarding house for the railroad men, and the Raton Comet newspaper was established. The rapid expansion of the railroad into Northern New Mexico fueled regional growth in raising sheep and cattle, and the Raton Caol Field was developed in the area.

History. AT&SF rail yard in Raton, 1943. Ratón is Spanish for mouse. Raton Pass had been used by Spanish explorers and Native Americans for centuries to cut through the rugged Rocky Mountains, and the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail cuts through the city, along what is now Business I-25.
At the border of present-day New Mexico and Colorado, Raton Pass was one of the most important yet treacherous segments of the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail. The pass cut through the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains, allowing wagons access to the vast western territory.
