Filling out the California Withholding Form DE 4 is an important step to ensure accurate tax withholding from your wages or salary in California. The form helps your employer determine how much state income tax to withhold from your paycheck.
Obtain a copy of Form W-4 from the IRS or your employer. Fill out your personal information including name, address, and Social Security number. This form is similar to the federal Form W-4 but tailored explicitly to California state tax withholding.
DE 4 takes effect, compare the state income tax withheld with your estimated total annual tax. For state withholding, use the worksheets on this form, and for federal withholding use the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 919 or federal withholding calculations.
The California Form DE 4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate, must be completed so that you know how much state income tax to withhold from your new employee's wages. The importance of having each employee file a state withholding certificate as well as a federal Form W-4 cannot be overstated, so make its completion a priority.
