There are 45 astronomical observatories in the state of CA that have telescopes used for astronomy research. Some observatories are complexes that host multiple telescopes at the same site. Not all observatories may be open to the public. Please contact them for any public outreach programs.

California observatories and their amazing discoveries raise public interest in astronomy. Each year, people across the country buy hundreds of thousands of telescopes and become active stargazers. Visitors often come to Griffith Observatory just to observe astronomical events.
The Observatory and grounds are open to the public to visit, and during the spring and summer hosts public programs including observing through the historic telescopes, lectures, concerts, educational programs, and more.
Exhibits. Sparking imagination and inquiry through exposure to the awe and wonder inherent in astronomy is the goal of Griffith Observatory’s exhibit program. Each visitor is cast in the role of an observer and provided with opportunities to see and do real observing in authentic environments.
These devices enable visitors to look at objects in the Los Angeles Basin and surrounding mountains. Griffith Observatory is one of the premier public observatories in the world. One of the principal reasons is the presence and regular availability of high-quality public telescopes.
