There are 45 astronomical observatories in the state of CA that have telescopes used for astronomy research. Some observatories are complexes that host multiple telescopes at the same site. Not all observatories may be open to the public. Please contact them for any public outreach programs.

UCO is a multi-campus research unit. We operate the Lick Observatory, the technical labs at UC Santa Cruz and UCLA, and we are the managing partner of the Keck Observatory in Hawai’i. We are also the center for the UC participation in the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT) project.

The Observatory and grounds are open to the public to visit, and during the spring and summer hosts public programs including observing through the historic telescopes, lectures, concerts, educational programs, and more.
With some exceptions, Palomar Observatory is open to the public daily. These exceptions are Caltech institutional holidays (e.g., Juneteenth, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, December 24 through January 2), certain maintenance operations, and for possible weather emergencies.
