Grade: 6. Subject Area: English Language Arts (6–12) Domain: Reading: Literature. Cluster: Key Ideas and Details. Standard: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
Recognize variations from standard English in their own and others’ writing and speaking, and identify and use strategies to improve expression in conventional language.* L6.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Subject Area: English Language Arts (6–12) Domain: Reading: Informational Text. Cluster: Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity. Standard: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
At every grade level the standards cover reading, writing, written and oral English language conventions, and listening and speaking. Grade by grade, the standards create a vision of a balanced and comprehensive language arts program. Knowledge acquisition is a part of literacy development.
