In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school. Since 2010, a number of states across the nation have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Recognize variations from standard English in their own and others’ writing and speaking, and identify and use strategies to improve expression in conventional language.* L6.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Grade: 6. Subject Area: English Language Arts (6–12) Domain: Reading: Informational Text. Cluster: Key Ideas and Details. Standard: Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
At every grade level the standards cover reading, writing, written and oral English language conventions, and listening and speaking. Grade by grade, the standards create a vision of a balanced and comprehensive language arts program. Knowledge acquisition is a part of literacy development.

The State Board of Education adopted the English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework (ELA/ELD Framework) on July 9, 2014. Curriculum frameworks provide guidance to educators, parents, and publishers, to support implementing California content standards.
Grade 6. 1. *The California English Language Development Standards correspond to the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Science and Technical Subjects (CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy).
