Philosophy at Cambridge enables you to look behind the curtain to ask the toughest questions that no other subject can address. Explore human thought, the basis of knowledge, the nature of reason, consciousness and cognition, as well as the foundations of value and political theory.
The University of Cambridge was the birthplace of the 'Analytic' School of Philosophy in the early 20th century. The department is located in the Raised Faculty Building on the Sidgwick Site and is part of the Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities.
The Cambridge course in Philosophy explores human thought, the basis of knowledge, the nature of reason, consciousness and cognition, as well as the foundations of value and political theory. Its questions are intriguing and its study requires complex critical thinking, rigorous analysis and consideration of new perspectives.
The Faculty of Philosophy at Cambridge has a distinguished history. It has numbered among its members G.E. Moore, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Elizabeth Anscombe (all of whom will figure prominently in any history of the subject).

The Faculty welcomes applications for this degree in a wide range of philosophical areas. The PhD culminates in the production of a thesis of up to 80,000 words to be submitted between three and four years from the commencement of study for full-time study.
