16 Απρ 2023 · The original Camp Bowie was a World War I training camp near Fort Worth, Texas. On September 19, 1940, the U.S. War Department authorized construction of a new "Camp Bowie" near Brownwood. On September 27, 1940 work began on the site.
Camp Bowie, named in honor of the Texas patriot James Bowie, was a military training facility during World War II, and was the third camp in Texas to be so named. From 1940 to 1946, it grew to be one of the largest training centers in Texas.
13 Μαρ 2010 · Named for James Bowie (1795-1836), one of the commanders who died at the Alamo in Texas War for Independence, Camp Bowie was occupied in July 1917. First troops to arrive slept in deep Johnson grass that covered the site, an undeveloped suburb.

There were in mid-October, 1917, only four [56] cannons, evidently homemade "of dismantled wagons, sewer pipe and logs," available to the three artillery regiments. Four American field pieces were received from the Ordnance Department in 1917, two late in October and two in December.
The 36th Division was called up again for active federal service on 25 November 1940, during World War II (although the United States was neutral at this stage), departing for its mobilization station at Camp Bowie on 14 December 1940.
