Supporting Conservation and Understanding of Orangutans. Camp Leakey – Orangutan Foundation International. Located in the Tanjung Puting Reserve (now National Park) in Central Borneo, Camp Leakey was established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas and former spouse Rod Brindamour.
Projects have ranged from orangutan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology, to studies of orangutan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behaviour, and river system ecology. As an active research facility, Camp Leakey welcomes day visitors with local guides.
Established in 1986 by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas, OFI supports the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rainforest habitat in Borneo, while caring for and rehabilitating ex-captive orangutans for release back into the wild. In honor of Leakey, Galdikas' named the base camp Camp Leakey. The first work of the ORCP was taking orangutans that were being kept as pets from government officials and others. The formation of the ORCP gave Galdikas the opportunity to conduct 100,000 hours of observation of orangutans. [ 1 ]
