11 Ιουν 2014 · A recent kidney stone analysis revealed a stone composition of 80% Carbonate Apatite (Dahllite) and 20% Calcium Oxalate Dihydrate (Weddellite). Past stones were comprised mostly of Calcium Oxalate Dihydrate.

In 51 patients in whom the carbonate content of apatite could be measured, carbonate in the apatite was weakly predictive of positive stone culture with an optimal cutoff value of 13.5 % carbonate (sensitivity 0.61, specificity 0.80).
Calcium carbonate supplements, 1.3 g three times a day with meals, and cholestyramine bind oxalate in the intestinal lumen. Because of malabsorption, there is no risk of hypercalciuria. A new treatment is provision of oxalate-metabolizing bacterial cultures ( Oxalobacter ).
The proportion of calcium stones may account for pure calcium oxalate (CaOx) (50%), calcium phosphate (CaP, termed as apatite) (5%), and a mixture of both (45%) . The main constituent of calcium stones is brushite (calcium hydrogen phosphate) or hydroxyapatite [31, 32].
