Cartilage has a rubber-like extracellular matrix that is produced by chondrocytes that sit in lacunae (pockets) which give the cells of cartilage a unique look that can sometimes be easy to identify. However, you will need to be able to recognize the specific cartilage type.
Cells. The extracellular matrix of cartilage is secreted by chondroblasts, (chondro = cartilage), which are found in the outer covering layer of cartilage. As the chondroblasts secrete matrix and fibres, they become trapped inside it, and mature into cells called chondrocytes. (See diagram opposite)
Cartilage contains over 95% extracellular matrix in which cartilage cells (chondocytes) are embedded. This matrix is specialised in the different types of cartilage (hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage and fibrocartilage) to effect their different functional roles.
