It focuses on five groundbreaking musical moments of modernist formation that have produced long-lasting effects.

B.C. Very early in their musical history the Chinese began to attach enor-mous importance to the precision and maintenance of standard performing pitches and relative scale pitches, whose "correctness" and immutability were believed to have far-reaching cosmological and social consequences.
By analyzing seminal musical works composed during the Mao period, my research will reveal how modern Chinese orchestral music was used as a political tool in the nation-building of the People's Republic of China.
