23 Οκτ 2019 · A 2012 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report identified a number of barriers to substance use disorder care among active duty military personnel and veterans, including limited access to treatment, gaps in insurance coverage, stigma, fear of negative consequences, and lack of confidential services.
Our results indicate that male previous soldiers are at greater risk of alcohol problems than both current soldiers and civilian spouses. Health care and service providers should consider screening and monitoring soldiers who separate from the military, as alcohol use may increase.

In addition to poor clinical outcomes, military samples with co-occurring PTSD and OUD also demonstrate highly elevated rates of other SUDs, including alcohol (60 percent), cocaine (34.8 percent), marijuana (27.5 percent), sedatives (13.4 percent) and amphetamines (7.6 percent).10.
