The reaction is usually mild and self-limited, but the bites can transmit disease or result in bacterial superinfection.

Some species in the genus Leptotrombidium and Herpetacarus vector Orientia species, the bacteria that causes scrub typhus disease in humans. Scrub typhus is a life-threatening, febrile disease.

This life-threatening disease is widely endemic in Asian Pacific regions where more than one billion people are at risk of acquiring the infection and around one million new cases are estimated to occur annually.
In humans, chiggers can cause intense itching and small reddish welts on the skin. An infestation like that is called chigger dermatitis or trombiculosis. The intense irritation and subsequent scratching may result in secondary infection.
