25 Φεβ 2024 · Chiggers are the larvae of the Trombiculidae mite species. Bites from these mite larvae can cause local pruritus and irritation called trombiculiasis or trombiculosis. The reaction is usually mild and self-limited, but the bites can transmit disease or result in bacterial superinfection.
Chigger Bites. Chiggers are tiny mites that live outdoors in grassy or wooded areas near water. They thrive in warm temperatures, especially during the summer months and attach to your clothes and bite your skin. Chigger bites cause itching at the site of the bite, commonly near the seams of tight-fitting clothing.
Several species of Trombiculidae in their larva stage bite their animal host and by embedding their mouthparts into the skin cause "intense irritation", [4] or "a wheal, usually with severe itching and dermatitis ". [5][6][7] Humans are possible hosts.
