25 Απρ 2023 · Iron deficiency is a common cause of anaemia, often seen in pregnancy. Low iron levels may be caused by bleeding - for example, heavy periods or from the gastrointestinal tract (gut) (stomach ulcer, bowel cancer or piles). Sometimes the gut can't absorb enough iron - for example, in coeliac disease.
The cause of iron deficiency anaemia is often multifactorial and may be broadly attributed to dietary deficiency, malabsorption, increased loss, or increased requirements. Symptoms commonly include fatigue, dyspnoea, and headache.
Causes. Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common form of anaemia. Iron can be found in many foods that we eat, like red meat, fish and leafy green vegetables. If your diet doesn’t contain enough of these foods, you can develop iron deficiency anaemia. It can also be caused if your body doesn’t absorb iron from the food that you eat.
In adult men and postmenopausal women, GI blood loss is the most common cause of iron deficiency anaemia. It can be caused by aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, colonic carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, benign gastric ulceration, and angiodysplasia.
