A carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test measures CEA, a specific blood protein. Usually, people are born with high CEA levels that decrease as they get older. But some types of cancer can increase this protein.
A high level of CEA can be a sign of certain types of cancers. These include cancers of the colon and rectum , prostate , ovary , lung , thyroid , or liver . High CEA levels may also be a sign of some noncancerous conditions, such as cirrhosis , noncancerous breast disease , and emphysema .
15 Νοε 2021 · The normal range for CEA is 0 to 2.5 nanograms per milliliter of blood (ng/mL). If CEA levels remain elevated during treatment, the treatment may not have been as successful as hoped. Anything greater than 10 ng/mL suggests extensive disease, and levels greater than 20 ng/mL suggest the cancer may be spreading.
You can have normal CEA test results even though you have one of these cancers. Many other health problems that aren't cancer can make CEA levels rise, including certain conditions that affect your liver, digestion, or breathing. Most CEA tests use a sample of your blood to measure your CEA level.
