The center of mass is like finding an object’s ‘balance point.’ If an object has a regular shape, like a square or a circle, the center of mass is right at the middle, at the geometric center. But, if it’s a weird shape, like our fidget spinner, or has more stuff on one side, the center of mass moves closer to that side.
Scientists have a special term for the balancing point of an object. They call it the center of mass. “Mass” refers to... well, it’s really complicated. In a round object with equally distributed mass the center of the sphere is the center of the mass. To find the center of mass for an irregular object we would have to do more work.
