The double-spiral staircase. One of the architectural highlights is the spectacular open double-spiral staircase that is the centrepiece of the château. [1] . The two spirals ascend the three floors without ever meeting, illuminated from above by a sort of light house at the highest point of the château.
The castle is built on an unprecedented scale—a rectangular plan of 512 feet (156 meters) on its major facades, marked at each corner by enormous round towers. The fantastic outline of the upper parts bristle with more than 300 chimneys, dormer windows, and turrets.
The Château de Chambord boasts over 400 rooms, 80 staircases, and numerous grand halls. The rooms are large and often sparsely furnished, highlighting the sheer scale and opulence of the castle. Each room is designed with attention to detail, incorporating classical elements and decorative motifs.
The main body of the castle is roughly square in shape, with a large tower in each corner. There are also two symmetrical wings to the castle, each ending with a substantial tower. There are more than 400 rooms in the Chateau de Chambord and almost as many fireplaces, as well as 84 staircases.
The so-called “double helix” staircase services the principal floors of the building, all the way up to the crowning terraces, which are topped off by the tallest tower of the castle, the lantern tower.

The staircase, if not Leonardo's original idea, was likely a feature of the original model created by Domenico da Cortona.
What you will find, however, at this 16th-century gem, is an innovative architectural feature to move between floors: the Chambord staircase, which has two spirals so that two people can use the staircase at the same time without running into one another!
